October is Clergy Appreciation Month. Churches across the country will honor their pastors with cards, gifts, special services, and words of gratitude — and they should.
But I want to offer another way to show appreciation, one that lasts long after October ends.
One of the greatest gifts you can give your pastor is time — and time comes from structure.
The hidden weight pastors carry
Many pastors, especially in small and mid-sized churches, serve as preacher, counselor, and visionary — and also as office manager, IT department, bookkeeper, and event planner.
- Answering every email, call, and scheduling request
- Fixing the website, livestream, and sound system
- Tracking compliance, insurance, and paperwork
- Coordinating volunteers and events
- Preparing reports, letters, and announcements
Every hour spent on administration is an hour not spent in prayer, study, visitation, or with family.
Five ways to lighten the load
- Ask what drains them. Simply ask your pastor which administrative tasks take the most time. The answer will guide everything else.
- Build an administrative team. Even two or three dedicated volunteers can take over scheduling, communications, and records.
- Centralize church records. Membership, giving, documents, and calendars in one organized system means fewer questions routed to the pastor.
- Use technology wisely. Online giving, shared calendars, automated reminders, and AI-assisted drafting can save hours every week.
- Consider professional support. Virtual administrative and IT support gives a church professional help without the cost of a full-time hire.
Where AI fits — and where it does not
AI should never replace the pastor's voice, discernment, or care. But it can help draft announcements, organize notes, summarize meetings, and handle routine follow-ups. Used well, it returns time to the human work that only a shepherd can do.
Appreciation that lasts
This October, by all means, celebrate your pastor. And then consider giving a gift that keeps on giving: a church that runs with order, so your leader can focus on the calling.
At LaFaries Mortimer LLC, we help ministries build the administrative and technology support that lets leaders lead. Through LAAP Suite™ and virtual administrative services, we carry the operational load so the ministry can flourish.
